Girls CIF Runner Ups, Boys Third

Walnut, CA – Both the boys and girls cross country teams toed the line at CIF Southern Section Finals at Mt San Antonio College. The girls were making their 7th consecutive appearance and the boys their 5th consecutive. Both teams were racing for the opportunity to win a CIF championship and qualifying spot for the State Finals.

The GIRLS raced first with a bittersweet result placing second as a team! Although CIF Runner Ups is the best finish in OC history and the first time the girls have qualified a complete squad to the State Finals the girls were left wondering what could have been. Individual favorite and senior Roseanne Fleming faded from contention after the mile and struggled to the finish placing well back making the difference between CIF Champions Maranatha and the CIF Runner Up Lions. Cristy Garcia set the OC frosh record bettering Roseanne’s frosh time by one second (19:06-19:07) and placed 8th overall earning second team All CIF honors. Samantha Roesler and Tina Boskovich used team tactics to become the fourth and fifth girls in OC history to break 20 minutes on the Mt SAC course. Sam edged Tina both running 19:56. Emily Fuld, recovering from illness and missing school earlier in the week, still posted a personal best 20:27 behind Rosie’s 20:26. Brittani Gardella also took the second have of the week off for illness, but still posted a personal best 21:22. Morgan Temanson rounded out the crew running 21:45.

The girls will get a re-match next week with a bigger crown to win at the State Finals. Maranatha, the #1 ranked team in the state and Berkeley St. Mary’s will be heavily challenged by the now confident Lions squad. The Lions defeated St. Mary’s earlier this year for the Stanford Invitational title.

The BOYS raced next posting personal bests by all seven guys, but came just five points from the podium placing third overall. Third place is also the best finish in OC history, but the performance may provide the inspiration needed for the State Final next week. The defending state champions Big Bear placed second just five points ahead of the Lions with Nordhoff winning by 27 points. The Lions have beaten the Rangers on three occasions this season and will look for a fourth at the state meet. Charlie Petrie (15:50) improved his OC record with the first ever sub-16 mark at Mt SAC for a Lion. Charlie’s 3rd place finish is the best ever by an male Lion and equals Rosie’s best finish. Hunter Hays ran the #2 time in OC history with a brilliant 16:09 and a 5th place finish. Both Charlie and Hunter earned first team All CIF. Ethan Long’s 12th place finish and 16:19 earned him second team All CIF honors and the third fastest mark in OC history. Rafael Garcia ran beautiful personal best 16:41. Justin Sullivan (17:24), Mike Colarossi (17:30) and Nick Colarossi (17:47) ran fantastically all improving. Mike ran with 14 stitches in his right knee from an injury the day before. The boys took nearly two minutes off the OC team time record.

CIF Prelims - OC Boys & Girls #1 Qualifiers for Finals

Sat, Nov 11th - A first for OC cross country and a first for Coach Smith...heat victories at CIF Prelims, but one victory was not enough. The Lions tallied three victories on the day.

Both the boys and the girls won their heats while holding back on the pace and holding out top runners resting for next week's finals. Roseanne Fleming added an easy paced individual heat victory to the mix, the 14th of her career. All of this looks to be predicting promising results at CIF Finals.

The boys started their post-season run in heat two of two with Charlie Petrie pacing the Lions running a comfortable 16:12 which is just one second off his OC record and a 3rd place finish. Ethan Long (16:36) and Hunter Hays (16:37) came in next gliding to 5th and 6th place respectively. Ethan is the first boy and only the third OC runner to ever run in four CIF Prelims (Laura Fredrickson and Roseanne Fleming are the other two). Hunter posted a personal best 16:37 cutting 34 seconds from his PR. Rafael Garcia cruised home in 12th place smiling and giving thumbs up as he PR'd with a 16:54 improving by 26 seconds. Justin Sullivan closed the deal on the team points with a 35th place 17:54 followed by Nick Colarossi (18:14, 41st) and frosh alternate Ryan Huning (18:21, 48th). Ryan chopped 1:59 from his performance 3 weeks ago at the Mt SAC Invitational. The boys team placed 1st in the heat 2 point better than Nordhoff. They also posted the fastest team time of the qualifying teams making them the #1 qualifier for next week's CIF SS Finals.

The girls made statement with their return to the post-season posting the fastest qualifying time in the prelims. The Lions did not send a team to the post-season last year, but came back this year posting a 99:47 team time good for an OC record, 5:13 faster than the previous record!! La Reina won heat two with an impressive 100:34 and their best performance of the season and racing with all of its top athletes, but the Lions answered running nearly a minute faster while holding out two of the top 6. Roseanne Fleming ran away with the individual victory in 18:54. Cristy Garcia ran 19:22 to become the 2nd fastest performer and freshman in OC history, Cristy placed 4th. Samantha Roesler and Tina Boskovich placed 16th and 17th with PR's of 10:16 and 20:17. Catherine Price rocketed to a 20:58 (3:02 faster than her league finals time) as the #5 runner for OC clinching the heat victory for the Lions. Morgan Temanson acted as the displacer adding valuable points to the opposing team while PR'ing in 21:19, a 1:09 improvement. Rookie Fallon Cislo filled in for Emily Fuld (resting at home ill) to round out the OC team. Fallon improved her performance from the Mt SAC invitational (26:38) 3 weeks ago taking 4:42 off her PR and running 21:56, yikes!
