Ventura County Championships

Moorpark HS - The Lions added three Ventura County Championships! The girls 4x800m, boys high jump and girls pole vault took second in the boys 4x800m, third in the girls 1600m all in less than an hour. Then the Lions closed the meet with OC records in the girls and boys 3200m then the girls 4x400m. All while resting the state's fastest 100m and 200m runner and the CIF division leading 4x100m for the post-season campaign.

The girls 4x800m team was the first running event of the meet and the first relay county title in OC history. Samantha Roesler ran her four and final VCC posting her second fastest lifetime and season-best for the 800m. Her 2:33.3 had the team in contention has she charged down the home stretch to exchange with sophomore Fallon Cislo. Fallon took the baton and immediately ran to the front of the pack at a 100m then ran away from the pack just 200m into her 800m leg. She continued to lengthen the lead running 2:31.1 (PR) and passing the stick with frosh Cristy Garcia who hammered the pace lengthening the lead even more. Never slowing she clocked 2:29.7 (PR) for the two lap distance and handed the baton to frosh Niki MacWhirter who also pushed the pace early and strode to the finish in 2:30.1 (PR) to seal the county title. The team time bettered the old record by 16 seconds posting a 10:04.59. The girls ran without OC record holder and 3-time 800m CIF finalist Roseanne Fleming in order to let her be fresh for the Invitational 1600m shortly after the conclusion of the relay. This was only the third VCC title in OC history for the girls and first in a running event.

Lauren Radke soared over 11 feet in the pole vault for the third time this season and locked up her first county title. She climbed the rankings every year to finally take top honors her senior year. Moments later Jules Sharpe cleared 6 feet 6 inches to seal his first county title in the high jump. This is the third OC county title in the high jump event, Chehara Shields and Shannon Armstrong each won the title also. Jules also earned all-county honors placing 6th in the triple jump.

Other highlights include both 3200m OC records falling followed by a new girl's 4x400m OC record. Cristy Garcia picked up her second OC record of the night when she covered the 8-lapper in 11:48.46 breaking Amber Meissner's 2002 record by 5 seconds. Amber was sixth at CIF Finals that season. Charlie Petrie went crazy in the second mile of his 3200m moving past opponents and to the front finishing in 9:48.15. This took 10 seconds off of Hunter Hays' record set at last year's Ventura Champs. The best part of this school record is that it is finally faster than Kim Mortensen's national high school record of 9:48.59...0.44 seconds, phew! Charlie also ran a life-time best (2:05.4) 800m leading off the Ventura County Runner Up 4x800 of OC. Jennifer Philen (1:04.5) ran first for the girls 4x400m. Roseanne Fleming ran second and posted a 59 split for her second fastest career mark (Only her 59.4 split at CIF Finals 2006 as a part of the old 4x400 record was faster). Frosh Gillian Llyod scored a 1:02.9 for her career-best in the third spot and frosh Niki MacWhirter picked up her second OC Record of the night with her 1:04.0 anchor leg.
