Tri Valley League Finals

Lions Set Records Entering Post Season

Thu, Nov 5, 2009 - The cross country teams traveled to La Reina for the Tri Valley League Finals. The course with the highest degree of difficultly did not promise to produce fast times or easy passage into the post season, but this young batch of Lions left their mark in OC's history books.

Boys JV kicked things off racing first for the Lions. Andrew Levine brilliantly paced himself to a 4th place finish and the fastest ever OC boys JV time (19:17) on the La Reina course (old record Bobby Nordlund 20:31). Andrew was positioned in the high 30's in the first half mile but cruised past the competition into the top 4 at the finish. Devin Long may have delivered the performance of his career with a 19:51, also faster than the previous OC JV best. Both boy's times correlate to solid 18 min Mt SAC marks. Grant Foraker (20:35), Aaron Freedman (21:04) and Pablo Gomez (21:30) rounded out the team which tallied an OC boys JV team time record on the LR course of 102:18 (old record 105:05 in 2007). The boys tied for 2nd but lost the tie break and placed third in league.

Girls varsity were next led by Fallon Cislo's 7th place finish which earned her First Team All Tri Valley League and she bettered the OC record and senior best with a 20:22. Cristina Gracia, coming back from injury, was 12th in 21:30 while Niki MacWhirter was 13th in 21:30. Both earned Second Team All Tri Valley. Cristy also bettered the OC Junior best time. Megan Huning's 22:03 earned her the OC Sophomore best and Tri Valley Honorable Mention. Madagan Riley (23:43) and Jackie Brody (24:06) picked up Honorable Mention honors as well. Kahala Bonsignore posted a 24:45 to round out the varsity squad. The girls placed 3rd in league and beat Fillmore by 26 points. The girls set the OC team time record by shattering the 2007 team's time by 5:24. The 2007 team went on to win the state title.

Boys varsity ran intelligently by waiting for the hills to strike. Vincent Colarossi became only the second sophomore in OC history to earn runner up honors. Enzo's runner up equals Charlie Petrie's runner up in 2006, but Enzo's time broke Charlie's OC school record (set his junior year) by 2 seconds 17:35 to 17:37 respectfully. Ryan Huning was 4th and joined Enzo with earning First Team All Tri Valley honors. Ryan's 17:39 narrowly missed Charlie's OC junior best. Derek Stoutland (10th, 18:15) and Taylor Losi (11th, 18:18) both picked up Second Team All Tri Valley honors. Arthur J King (18:34), Jacob White (18:35) and Nick Colarossi (19:10) all locked down Honorable Mention honors. The boys team time shattered the 2007 team's record by 1:01. The 2007 team held every course record placed an OC best ever boys finish at the state finals of 7th.

Girls JV headed out last for the Lion racers. Amy Anderson took the lead with the fastest ever OC girls JV best time of 24:42. Torie Gates (25:24), Antonia Joy Bates (25:52), Danni Alakija (26:56), Kayla Smith (30:07), Ashley McCabe (30:32) and Kirsten Temanson (30:53) comprised the team which also took its place in the record book with the OC best ever girls JV team time.

Runners who ran on the La Reina course in 2007 bettered their times: Nick C 19:10 from 20:52 (-1:42), Ryan 17:39 from 20:48 (-3:09), Fallon 20:22 from 25:39 (-5:17), Niki 21:30 from 25:30 (-4:00), 24:06 from 26:03 (-1:57) and Devin 19:52 from 22:30 (-2:38).

Next step is CIF Southern Section Prelims on Sat, Nov 14th.
