Fastback Shootout Kicks Off the Lions Season

Boys Frosh 4th, Break OC Frosh Team Time Record
Niki Sets OC Sophomore Mark

Sat, Sep 13, 2008 - A partial squad collected at OCS at 5 am to trave lto Mt San Antonio College (Mt SAC) for their first run on the historic course. The Fastback Shootout is only a 1.9 mile version of the normally 2.91 mile course that annually hosts the largest invitational high school in the world and later the CIF Southern Section championships.

The most notable performance came from the freshmen team as they rumbled through the valley loop, over the switchbacks and poop-out hill, and then to finish with a new freshmen team time school record. Vicent Colarossi led the way with an 11:33, the second fastest freshmen time in OC history on the 1.9 mile course (Nick Colarossi's 11:25 is the fastest frosh time). AJ King (12:14), Stephen Cooper (12:21), Taylor Losi (12:38) ranked 4th-5th-6th freshmen performers in OC history on the FS course. Jack Ramsey (13:!7) and Nick Oddi (13:#8) also cracked the OC top 15 frosh list. rounding out the freshmen team were great runs by Pablo Gomez (13:58) and Joel Begley (15:15). Rob Thomson led OC in the junior race with an 11:52 (#6 jr in OC history) in his cross country debut. Kevin Sutman smashed his personal best on the course by :48 with a 13:43 and Sean Sweeney debuted at 13:58. Grant Forakers' cross country debut led the sophomores with a 13:10 just holding off his classmate Jacob White also with a 13:10. Both boys made the OC all time sophomore list for FS ranking 14th and 15th.

The girls performances were led by sophomore Niki MacWhirter who ran a personal best 13:44 and improved from last year by :57. Nike also set the OC sophomore record for the 1.9 mile FS course. Jackie Brody (15:41) ranks #4 OC Soph all time, Brittany Burr (16:02) #5 OC soph all time and Natalie Zaas (17:30) is #7 OC soph all time. Freshmen Madagan Riley (15:59) and Brittany Tayloe (16:18) represented OC in the frosh race and rank #9 and #10 on the OC frosh all time list. Laken Romine braved the starting line of the junior race by herself and shortly after the start of the race injured her ankle. She managed to complete the race anyway and wins the iron man (woman) award for the day. Senior Stephanie Andresen debuted with an 18:45 and is the third fastest OC senior to run FS. Stephanie Armstrong made her first start, but Coach Hays pulled her from the race mid-way. He felt is was a sufficient effort and she will be better prepared next time.
