Triumph and Disappointment at CIF SS Prelims
May 12th - At Carpinteria High School for the final time this season (fourth in five weeks) the Lions made their bids to qualify for CIF SS D4 Finals.
Qualifiers were led by Roseanne Fleming who will defend her title in the 1600m earning the #1 seed in the 1600m and #2 seed in the 800m. Rosie won both of her qualifying heats easily and effortlessly with a PR in the 1600m 5:11.43 and a season best 2:17.53 in the 800m. Chris Owusu showed his leg is healing posting easy heat wins in the 100m and 200m with times of 10.86 and 22.02 that earned him the #2 and #3 seeds respectively. Both were second best marks lifetime and this is the third CIF SS Final aapearance for Chris in his career, second in the 200m. Malcolm Jones qualifed as the #3 seed in the 110HH with a 15.70. Jules Sharpe and Jeremy Reed qualified in the high jump and Jeremy also added the triple jump to his itinerary. This is the second year in a row Jeremy has qualified in the high jump. Shannon Armstrong will make a repeat visit to the finals in the high jump. Shannon won the title on 2005, but sat out with an injury last year. Lauren Radke returns to her third CIF Finals and will defend her title in the pole vault.
Heartbreaks include a qualifying effort by Malcolm in the 300IH, but he was later DQ'd for kicking the hurdles down. Then the 4x400m team which established a greater than five second lead, but had to hit the brakes to make the finals exchange. Unfortunately the officials were not in good position to see the exchange was legal and still ruled a DQ. The relay would have been the #2 seed. Keiosha Hunt added a trifecta of fouls to not advance in the shot put and Cathrine Price missed in the 300IH. All of these should be motivation for next season!!
Cif SS D4 Finals are at Cerritos College next Sat, May 19th. See you there...
